Coachella Traffic Improvements Show Early Success in Indio

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is back — and this year, traffic is off to a much smoother start.

In Indio, city officials have rolled out a new traffic plan aimed at avoiding the major delays seen during last year’s opening weekend, when some festivalgoers reported waiting up to nine hours to access campgrounds.

Early signs suggest the changes are working.

Along key routes like Avenue 50 and Avenue 52, traffic has remained steady, with no major backups reported. Officials say one major improvement is maintaining a continuous flow of vehicles, preventing the gridlock that caused last year’s “Carmageddon.”

The city has also reintroduced an additional campground check-in area—first tested during last year’s second weekend and Stagecoach—which is helping distribute traffic more efficiently.

Festivalgoers arriving this year say they’re pleasantly surprised by how quickly they’re getting through.

The festival, held at the Empire Polo Club, brings in more than 100,000 attendees each weekend, making traffic management a major priority for the city.

Officials are also advising drivers to plan ahead, especially near the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, where heavy traffic is expected as attendees pick up wristbands.

While things are moving smoothly now, authorities say they will continue monitoring traffic patterns throughout the weekend to ensure the improvements hold.
