Major Storm Raises New Flood Threat in Hawaii Weeks After Devastating Flooding

A powerful storm is once again putting Hawaii at risk of major flooding, just weeks after the state experienced its worst flooding in two decades.

Forecasters say the multi-day storm is expected to peak Thursday into Friday, bringing widespread heavy rain across the islands. Some areas could see between 8 to 12 inches of rain, with even higher totals possible in mountainous regions.

A flood watch is in effect statewide, with officials warning of possible flash flooding and landslides. The threat is especially concerning because the ground is already saturated from recent storms, meaning even moderate rainfall could quickly lead to dangerous conditions.

The storm is expected to impact Kauai and Oahu first, before spreading east to Maui and the Big Island. Strong winds are also part of the system, with gusts up to 60 miles per hour possible in some areas.

Emergency crews are already preparing, with resources staged across the islands and nearly 300 National Guard members activated to assist with storm response efforts.

This marks the third major storm to hit Hawaii since mid-March. The last round of severe weather triggered widespread flooding, prompting more than 200 rescues and causing significant damage to homes and infrastructure.

Officials are urging residents to stay alert, prepare for possible evacuations, and take the threat seriously as conditions are expected to worsen.
