Tax Deadline One Week Away: What You Need to Know Before April 15th

The April 15th tax deadline is one week away, and if you haven't filed yet, there are a few things worth knowing before you scramble to get it done.
You can request an automatic six-month extension, but experts caution that it only extends the time to file, not the time to pay. Whatever you owe is still due by April 15th, or you risk penalties.
One thing experts are urging filers to avoid: using artificial intelligence to speed up the process. AI tools aren't trained on complex tax codes, and returns completed with AI assistance may be more likely to trigger an audit.
If you have last-minute questions, the IRS offers an Interactive Tax Assistant on its website. Low-income filers who are 60 or older can get free in-person help through a Volunteer Tax Assistance site or AARP. Military members can access free filing support through MilTax.
