Artemis II Astronauts Splash Down Off California Coast After Historic Moon Mission
A historic chapter in space exploration has come to a successful end, as NASA’s Artemis II crew safely returned to Earth Friday evening.
Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego at approximately 5:07 p.m. Pacific Time.
The crew had just completed a groundbreaking 10-day mission around the moon, traveling farther from Earth than any humans in history.
Shortly after landing, Commander Reid Wiseman confirmed the crew was in good condition, telling Mission Control, “We are stable. Four green crew members.”
The mission marks a major milestone for NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the moon and eventually send astronauts to Mars. Officials say the successful splashdown sets the stage for future lunar missions.
During their journey, the astronauts also made new discoveries, identifying previously uncharted craters on the moon’s surface. The crew proposed naming one crater “Integrity” after their Orion spacecraft, and another in honor of Wiseman’s late wife, a tribute that moved mission control teams.
As recovery operations continue, the successful return of Artemis II is being celebrated as a significant step forward in human space exploration.
