Close Call at LAX: Frontier Jet Slams Brakes to Avoid Collision with Trucks
A frightening close call at Los Angeles International Airport is now under investigation after a Frontier Airlines jet was forced to abruptly stop to avoid hitting two trucks.
The incident happened late Wednesday night as Frontier Flight 3216 was taxiing for takeoff. According to air traffic audio, the pilot reported the trucks suddenly crossed directly in front of the aircraft, leaving the crew no choice but to slam on the brakes.
The near collision occurred in an area of the taxiway where visibility is limited due to nearby structures, meaning air traffic controllers could not directly see the aircraft. While controllers can communicate with pilots in that zone, drivers on service roads are required to yield to planes.
The pilot described the moment as one of the closest calls they had ever experienced, adding that the sudden stop prompted concern for passengers onboard. Flight attendants were quickly checked to ensure everyone in the cabin was safe.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the aircraft was able to continue its journey to Atlanta after the incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating what led to the trucks entering the aircraft’s path.
The incident comes amid heightened attention to runway and taxiway safety, following a recent deadly collision involving a regional jet and a vehicle at another U.S. airport.
