FAA Targets Video Gamers to Help Fill Air Traffic Controller Shortage
The Federal Aviation Administration is taking a new approach to tackle a growing shortage of air traffic controllers—by recruiting video gamers.
The FAA, alongside the Department of Transportation, is launching a hiring campaign aimed at younger applicants, encouraging gamers to “level up” their careers by applying for one of the most high-pressure jobs in aviation.
Officials say the agency currently has about 11,000 controllers on the job, along with roughly 4,000 trainees in the pipeline, but still needs thousands more to meet demand.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the strategy is about adapting to reach the next generation. The campaign highlights skills often developed through gaming—like quick decision-making, focus, and the ability to manage complex situations—as qualities that translate well to air traffic control.
The FAA plans to begin accepting applications April 17, with the hiring window closing after 8,000 submissions. Selected candidates will go through a rigorous process that includes aptitude testing, medical and security clearances, and training at the FAA academy.
The push comes as the agency works to modernize its systems, replacing outdated technology like floppy disks and paper flight strips with more advanced tools.
Despite the innovative recruitment strategy, officials stress the job remains demanding and high-stakes. Recent incidents have highlighted the pressures controllers face, especially amid staffing shortages and increasing air traffic.
The FAA says it has hired more than 2,400 controllers over the past year but acknowledges more are needed to keep up with retirements and long-term demand.
As the aviation industry evolves, the agency hopes tapping into the gaming community will help build the next generation of controllers ready to manage the skies.
