Signature Hole
Indian Wells Golf Resort: Players Course #3
In this edition of Signature Hole, we head to the Indian Wells Golf Resort to take a closer look at the third hole on the newly redesigned Players Course.
Joined by Director of Golf Joe Williams, the focus is on a par 4 that blends simplicity with strategic decision-making. While the hole may appear straightforward, it offers a classic risk-reward setup, challenging golfers to think carefully about club selection and positioning.
From the tee, the fairway invites a smart, controlled shot rather than an aggressive drive. With water flanking both sides near the green, accuracy is key. As Williams explains, playing to the “fat part” of the fairway can set up a manageable approach shot and avoid unnecessary risk.
The second shot introduces another layer of complexity, with wind playing a major factor. Golfers must decide whether to go high and let the wind influence the ball, or keep the shot low with a controlled trajectory to limit its impact. Williams demonstrates how a lower, more controlled shot can help navigate those conditions effectively.
Around the green, the challenge continues. Subtle contours and elevation changes can make even short putts tricky, especially when putting downhill. Speed control becomes critical, as a slightly aggressive stroke can quickly turn into a difficult comeback attempt.
The redesigned green complex adds to the difficulty, rewarding precision while punishing shots that miss in the wrong spots.
As Williams points out, it doesn’t have to be a long hole to be a great one—and hole number three proves exactly that.
