New Hampshire Child Advocate Increases Oversight of Youth Detention Center Amid Abuse Allegations

New Hampshire officials are increasing oversight at a youth detention facility following serious allegations of abuse, neglect, and illegal practices.

The Office of the Child Advocate says it is now conducting weekly visits to the Sununu Youth Services Center in Manchester as part of an ongoing investigation into conditions at the facility.

The move comes after multiple complaints, including reports of extended lockdowns that limited children’s movement and denied them outdoor time. Officials also investigated an incident involving the alleged improper use of a physical restraint, where a child was reportedly held in a prohibited position for more than three minutes and later suffered a broken bone.

The Office of the Child Advocate says there were concerns about delays in providing medical care following that incident.

State officials say they are working closely with the Department of Health and Human Services and facility leadership to review the allegations and determine next steps.

The goal, according to the Child Advocate’s office, is to ensure the safety and well-being of children at the facility and return it to a standard of care that meets expectations.

The New Hampshire Department of Justice also says it is taking the allegations seriously and is cooperating with the ongoing review.

Officials emphasize the importance of addressing concerns quickly, warning that unsafe conditions can further traumatize youth already in vulnerable situations.
