A growing political debate is unfolding over the fitness of President Donald Trump, as Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin calls for a formal cognitive evaluation.
Raskin is urging the White House physician to conduct a comprehensive cognitive test of Donald Trump, citing concerns over the president’s recent rhetoric surrounding the conflict with Iran.
In a letter, Raskin pointed to what he described as increasingly volatile and concerning public statements, arguing that Americans must be confident in the president’s ability to carry out the duties of the office—especially during a time of international conflict.
The request comes as some Democrats—and a few conservative voices—have raised broader questions about presidential fitness. Some have even referenced the 25th Amendment, which outlines a process for removing a president deemed unable to serve. However, such a move would require support from the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet, something there is currently no indication of.
Raskin also noted that concerns about presidential cognitive ability have been raised by both parties in recent years, arguing that oversight on the issue should be applied consistently.
The White House has not yet responded publicly to the request. President Trump has previously pointed to his own health evaluations, with his physician stating he is in strong physical condition.
The situation continues to add to the political tension in Washington as lawmakers debate leadership, accountability, and national security during a critical time.
