Riverside County Pursuit Under Review After Grappler Device Fails, Ends in Fatal Crash

A high-speed pursuit in Jurupa Valley is now under review after a key law enforcement tool failed to deploy, leading to a violent crash and the suspect’s death.

The incident happened on Bellegrave Avenue when Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a suspected grand theft suspect using a grappler device. The tool is designed to safely end pursuits by entangling a vehicle’s rear tires with a nylon net.

However, officials say the device did not properly deploy. Moments later, the suspect lost control and crashed into a homeowner’s backyard wall, causing significant damage to the property, including the garage.

After the crash, deputies attempted to negotiate a surrender. Authorities say the suspect ultimately used a handgun to take his own life.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department says all pursuits are routinely reviewed to ensure policies and procedures are followed. The department is also evaluating the effectiveness of the grappler device in this case.

Despite the failure, officials say the grappler has generally proven to be an effective tool and will continue to be used.

The homeowner affected by the crash is now dealing with the aftermath, including structural damage, and has been advised to file a report to determine whether the county will cover repair costs.

The identity of the suspect has not yet been released as the investigation continues.
