Eric Swalwell faces pressure to exit governor’s race following sexual assault allegations
Democratic Congressman and gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell is facing mounting pressure to drop out of the race following sexual assault allegations reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
According to the report, a former female staffer alleges she was sexually assaulted by Swalwell in 2019 while she was intoxicated. Swalwell has strongly denied the claims.
In a statement, Swalwell said, “These allegations are false and come on the eve of an election against the front runner for governor. I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action.”
The controversy has already had an impact on his campaign. Swalwell, who previously had strong establishment backing, has seen several key endorsements withdrawn. In addition, at least four senior campaign staff members, including a top consultant, resigned prior to the report becoming public.
Locally, the fallout has led to schedule changes. Swalwell canceled a planned town hall event in Palm Desert on Wednesday, along with a scheduled interview with NBC Palm Springs.
As the situation develops, questions remain about the future of his campaign and how the allegations could impact the broader race for governor.
