Desert Hot Springs Murder Suspect Denied Bail as Family of Brianna Chavez Speaks Out in Emotional Court Hearing

An emotional scene unfolded inside the Indio Larson Justice Center as Aaron Espinoza, the Desert Hot Springs man accused of murdering 30-year-old Brianna Chavez, appeared in court for his felony settlement conference.

Family members of Chavez filled the courtroom, speaking out and demanding justice as they continue to cope with the devastating loss. Chavez, a mother of four, was found shot to death in Desert Hot Springs on March 15. Prosecutors have charged Espinoza with first-degree murder in connection with her death.

During the hearing, loved ones delivered powerful victim impact statements. Chavez’s mother, Lorraine Alcantar, shared the ongoing pain of losing her only daughter, describing the heartbreak that continues to affect their entire family.

“It’s not easy,” Alcantar said. “Sometimes I think she’s going to call me, but I know that’s not going to happen.”

Alcantar also expressed fear for her family’s safety, especially for Chavez’s children. Her 10-year-old granddaughter, Jaylene, remains afraid in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Despite a request from the defense for bail, the judge denied it, a decision Alcantar said brought her some relief.

“That’s a weight lifted off my shoulders,” she said, adding that her family continues to fear for their lives until justice is served.

Chavez was described as a caring woman who aspired to become a certified nurse assistant, driven by a passion for helping others. Her death has left a lasting void not only for her children but for her entire family.

Even in grief, Alcantar says she is determined to turn tragedy into advocacy, vowing to push for stronger protections for victims of domestic violence.

“I will not stop here,” she said. “I will seek further help to make justice for her and to change laws for domestic violence.”

Espinoza remains in custody, and the felony settlement conference has been continued to May 20, when he is expected to appear again in court.
