UPDATE: CHP Revises Big Rig Crash Details on I-10 in Thousand Palms, Now 8 Vehicles Involved

An update tonight on the deadly big rig crash along Interstate 10 in Thousand Palms, where new information from the California Highway Patrol is changing what we know about the incident.

According to CHP, the number of vehicles involved in the crash has been revised from six to eight. The collision happened around 7:30 Tuesday morning near the Washington Street exit, when a big rig crossed the center divider into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into a cement truck.

The driver of the cement truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Several others were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

Video from the scene shows the violent impact, with both trucks heavily damaged and debris scattered across the roadway. Hours later, debris could still be seen along Varner Road, as crews continue cleanup efforts.

Traffic heading westbound on Interstate 10 remains impacted, with backups reported as authorities work to fully clear the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but local truck drivers are speaking out about the dangers of the job, emphasizing the importance of rest and awareness behind the wheel. Long hours and fatigue are ongoing concerns in the trucking industry, and drivers say staying alert is critical for safety on busy highways.

Witnesses described the crash as devastating, noting how quickly it unfolded and how little time drivers had to react once the big rig crossed into opposing lanes.

CHP continues to investigate what led up to the crash.
