Riverside County Extends Short-Term Rental Moratorium in Thousand Palms
Riverside County supervisors have unanimously approved an extension of the moratorium on new short-term rental permits in Thousand Palms.
The decision, made during the same meeting where supervisors addressed other key issues, will allow the county more time to study how short-term rentals are impacting local neighborhoods — particularly during large-scale events like the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
The moratorium was originally set to expire this week but will now remain in place without a specific end date. By law, the extension could last up to 10 more months, though officials say it may be lifted sooner depending on the outcome of the study.
County leaders say the goal is to better understand how vacation rentals affect quality of life, traffic, noise levels, and overall community stability in the area.
There are currently about 60 short-term rental properties operating in the affected parts of Thousand Palms.
Officials say the additional time will help them gather data and determine whether future regulations or policy changes are needed.
