SantaCon organizer accused of stealing over $1 million meant for charity

The organizer behind SantaCon is facing serious federal charges after prosecutors say he stole more than $1 million intended for charity.

According to the Justice Department, Stefan Pildes allegedly defrauded tens of thousands of attendees and participating venues over several years, promising that proceeds from the popular holiday bar crawl would go to charitable causes.

Investigators say that between 2019 and April 2026, SantaCon generated approximately $2.7 million. However, authorities claim only a small portion of that money was actually donated, with more than half allegedly used for Pildes’ personal expenses.

Prosecutors allege the funds were spent on a wide range of luxury items and experiences, including a $365,000 home renovation in New Jersey, a $3,000 dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant, a luxury vehicle, and vacations to destinations like Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Vail.

SantaCon participants typically paid between $10 and $20 for tickets, under the impression their money was supporting charitable efforts. In promotional materials, the event reportedly told attendees their contributions would go “directly to charity,” a claim now at the center of the case.

Authorities say even participating bars and restaurants contributed a percentage of their sales as part of what was described as a charitable commission.

Federal officials say the alleged scheme deprived charities of significant funding while misleading thousands of people who believed they were supporting a good cause.

Pildes is expected to appear in federal court, and if convicted, could face up to 20 years in prison.
