California Governor Race Shifts Ahead of April Debate

There are new developments in the race for governor of California as the field continues to take shape ahead of a key debate.

Former congressman Eric Swalwell has officially dropped out of the race, opening the door for additional candidates to qualify for the upcoming primary debate on April 22.

According to recent polling from Emerson College, Republican candidate Steve Hilton is currently leading with 17%, followed by Chad Bianco at 14%. On the Democratic side, businessman Tom Steyer is also polling at 14%.

With Swalwell no longer in the race, Democratic candidates Xavier Becerra, Katie Porter, and Matt Mahan are now expected to participate in the debate.

The debate is scheduled for April 22, and NBC Palm Springs will broadcast it live, with coverage beginning at 7 p.m.
