Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax in murder-suicide that leaves two children orphaned
A tragic incident in Virginia has left a family and community in shock after former Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax allegedly shot and killed his wife before taking his own life.
Police say the shootings happened inside the couple’s home in Annandale, where both Justin Fairfax and his wife, Cerina Fairfax, were found dead. Their two teenage children were inside the house at the time, with their son making the 911 call.
Investigators say the incident appears to have stemmed from an ongoing domestic dispute tied to a pending divorce. Authorities say Justin Fairfax allegedly shot his wife multiple times before going upstairs and fatally shooting himself.
Court records show the couple had been separated and living in different parts of the home while divorce proceedings were underway. A judge had recently issued orders related to custody and required Fairfax to move out by the end of April.
Documents from the case also describe ongoing personal struggles, including concerns about alcohol use and mental health challenges in recent years.
The children are now being cared for by family members, with support services being provided to help them cope with the loss.
Fairfax, once considered a rising political figure, served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022. His career was later overshadowed by past allegations, which he denied.
Officials say the tragedy is a reminder that domestic violence can impact any family, regardless of background.
