Pickleball Boom Brings Rise in Injuries, Experts Warn

Pickleball continues to surge in popularity across the Coachella Valley, but experts say the sport’s rapid growth is also leading to a rise in injuries.

At Palm Desert Civic Center Park, courts remain packed—even in triple-digit heat—as players take to one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.

But with that growth comes risk.

Health professionals report seeing an increase in injuries ranging from strains and sprains to more serious issues like Achilles tears, fractures, and even eye injuries caused by fast-moving balls.

According to research from the National Library of Medicine, pickleball-related emergency room visits are on the rise nationwide.

Experts say proper preparation can make a big difference. That includes warming up, strengthening key muscle groups, and considering sport-specific training to prevent injuries.

They also stress the importance of knowing your limits, especially in extreme heat, and taking breaks when needed.

As April marks National Pickleball Month, the message is clear: staying active is important, but staying safe is just as critical.
