Pickleball injuries rising in Coachella Valley as experts urge players to take precautions
Pickleball continues to surge in popularity across the Coachella Valley, but with more players hitting the courts, injuries are also on the rise.
At Palm Desert Civic Center Park, courts remain packed—even in near 100-degree heat—as players embrace one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.
But experts warn the game comes with real health risks. Common injuries include Achilles tears, calf and hamstring strains, as well as sprains and fractures from falls. Eye injuries from fast-moving balls are also a growing concern.
Retired physical therapist Lisa Schroeder says the increase in injuries has been significant, noting the sport’s quick, explosive movements can put stress on the body—especially for those who aren’t properly prepared.
April marks National Pickleball Month, and research shows emergency room visits related to the sport are increasing nationwide.
To stay safe, experts recommend taking time to properly warm up before playing and focusing on sport-specific conditioning. Strengthening muscles in the shoulders, elbows, and legs can help reduce the risk of injury and improve performance on the court.
Some also suggest working with a physical therapist to develop preventative exercises tailored to pickleball’s demands.
Players are also encouraged to know their limits and avoid pushing too hard, especially in extreme heat.
As the sport continues to grow in popularity, staying mindful of safety can help players enjoy the game while avoiding time on the sidelines.
