“Bear suit” insurance scam leads to convictions in bizarre luxury car fraud case

A bizarre insurance fraud scheme involving a bear costume and luxury cars has led to convictions for three Southern California residents in a case investigators dubbed “Operation Bear Claw.”
According to the California Department of Insurance, the group staged fake bear attacks on high-end vehicles, then filed fraudulent claims seeking payouts totaling more than $140,000.
The investigation began after a suspicious claim involving a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost in Lake Arrowhead. The suspects submitted video footage claiming a bear had entered the vehicle and caused significant interior damage.
But investigators quickly noticed something wasn’t right.
After reviewing the footage, detectives determined the “bear” was actually a person wearing a costume. A biologist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife later confirmed the same conclusion.
Authorities say the group used the same tactic in two additional claims involving a Mercedes G63 AMG and a Mercedes E350, all tied to the same date and location.
Detectives eventually served a search warrant and recovered the bear costume from the suspects’ home, confirming the elaborate scheme.
Three individuals have since pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud charges. Each received 180 days in jail through a weekend program, along with probation and tens of thousands of dollars in restitution. A fourth suspect is expected back in court later this year.
Officials say while the case may sound unusual, insurance fraud is a serious crime that ultimately impacts consumers through higher premiums.
Investigators credit cooperation between state agencies and local law enforcement for uncovering what they call one of the more unusual scams they’ve encountered.
