Bike Safety in Warmer Weather: How to Choose and Wear a Helmet Properly
As temperatures rise and more people head outdoors, safety experts are reminding families to take precautions before hopping on a bike, starting with the right helmet. Warmer weather often means more cyclists on neighborhood streets, trails, and parks. But with that increase comes a higher risk of injury, especially for riders who are not properly protected. Experts say one of the most common and preventable mistakes is failing to wear a helmet, or wearing one incorrectly.
According to safety advocates, a properly fitted helmet can significantly reduce the risk of serious head injury in a crash. Still, many riders either skip the helmet altogether or wear one that does not fit correctly, limiting its effectiveness.
Mandy Gaither reports that choosing the right helmet starts with ensuring it meets safety standards and fits snugly on the head. A helmet should sit level, not tilted back or forward, and rest just above the eyebrows. The straps should form a V shape under the ears, and the chin strap should be secure but comfortable.
Experts also recommend replacing helmets after any significant impact or every few years, as materials can break down over time. For families, setting a good example is key. Parents who wear helmets consistently are more likely to have children who do the same. With more people expected to take advantage of the warmer weather in the coming months, safety officials say a few simple steps can make all the difference, ensuring that a fun ride does not turn into a preventable accident.
