Historic 120-year-old Steinway piano in Palm Springs set for restoration effort

A piece of old Hollywood history is getting a second life in Palm Springs, as efforts are underway to restore a rare 120-year-old Steinway grand piano.

The historic instrument sits inside American Legion Post 519, where it has been played and admired for generations. Known for its original ivory and ebony keys, the piano has a rich legacy tied to some of the biggest names in entertainment history.

According to pianist Leslie Demuth, legends like Oscar Levant, Al Jolson, Judy Garland, and Bob Hope once played the very same instrument during the height of Hollywood’s golden era.

But after more than a century of use, the piano is now showing its age. Many of its strings have worn down, leaving the sound softer than it once was. Experts say the instrument needs careful restoration to bring it back to life—while preserving the historic elements that make it so unique.

That’s why community members are now stepping up, with donations being collected through the American Legion to fund the restoration.

Organizers say the goal goes beyond preserving history. They hope the restored piano will serve as a source of inspiration for future generations of musicians in the Coachella Valley.

As the effort gains momentum, the piano stands as both a reminder of the past and a symbol of what music can continue to bring to the community.
