Former Trump Attorney Joseph diGenova Joins Justice Department Investigation Into John Brennan

The Justice Department is expanding its investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan by adding Joseph diGenova to the legal team in the Southern District of Florida. Multiple sources familiar with the matter indicate that diGenova, a longtime Washington attorney who previously served on Donald Trump’s legal team, will be assigned to the federal office in Fort Pierce.

This appointment follows reports that the Justice Department recently removed the career federal prosecutor who had been leading the Brennan investigation. That removal reportedly occurred after the prosecutor resisted internal pressure to quickly bring formal charges against the former CIA head.

DiGenova brings a long history of high-profile federal experience to the role, having served as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia in the 1980s. While he was part of the official defense team during the Robert Mueller investigation, he eventually moved to an outside advisory role due to legal conflicts involving his wife’s representation of witnesses in that probe.

The current investigation is being overseen by U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quinones. Documents from last fall suggest the probe is utilizing a grand jury in Fort Pierce to investigate what officials describe as a decade-long conspiracy by former law enforcement and intelligence figures. The focus of the inquiry involves allegations that federal officials targeted Donald Trump throughout the 2016 Russia interference investigation and subsequent special counsel probes.

The choice of the Fort Pierce location is notable as it is the same courthouse where federal Judge Aileen Cannon presides. Judge Cannon previously dismissed separate classified document charges brought against Trump in 2024. As this federal investigation into John Brennan and other former intelligence officials continues to develop, it remains a central point of focus for the Justice Department’s current leadership.
