White House Garden Tours Offer Public View of President Trump’s Landscape Overhaul

The White House opened its gates this weekend for the annual spring garden tours, providing a rare opportunity for locals and tourists to walk the South Lawn and view the historic grounds in bloom. However, visitors this year are encountering a significantly different landscape than in previous decades, as the current administration continues a series of sweeping renovations and architectural overhauls.

President Donald Trump, drawing on his background as a real estate developer, has been personally involved in the redesign of the outdoor spaces. The most notable change is the transformation of the iconic Rose Garden, which has seen its traditional grass replaced with stone pavers and the addition of gold accents. Recent weeks have also seen the installation of a Presidential Walk of Fame along the West Colonnade and new sculptures representing the founding fathers and George Washington.

Perhaps the most striking absence for returning visitors is the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden. The space, along with the East Wing, was razed last fall to clear the way for a massive new ballroom. While a White House official stated that some of the original trees and shrubbery are being preserved for replanting, the current view is dominated by construction cranes and white barricade walls. Plans for the new area feature a grand staircase and a brick patio utilizing original Mount Vernon brick, but they notably omit a direct replacement for the garden dedicated to the former first lady.

The experience for tourists has been mixed, as the sounds of the Marine Band are occasionally punctuated by the noise of heavy machinery. Some attendees described the construction as an eyesore that detracted from the historical ambiance, while others focused on the beautiful weather and the significance of the event. Despite the heavy construction elsewhere, the White House Kitchen Garden—established by Michelle Obama in 2009—remains intact, though it was restricted from direct public access this year.

Since the tours were first established by Pat Nixon in 1972, the White House grounds have served as a living museum of presidential history. Every administration leaves its mark through memorial trees and diplomatic symbols, and the current changes reflect the bold architectural vision of the Trump presidency. As legal challenges regarding the ballroom construction continue, the 2026 garden tours remain a unique window into the evolving identity of the nation’s most famous residence.
