Apple Announces CEO Succession Plan: John Ternus to Succeed Tim Cook as Johny Srouji Expands Role

CUPERTINO, Calif. — In a comprehensive update to its leadership structure, Apple announced on Monday that Tim Cook will step down as CEO, paving the way for a new generation of executives to lead the 4 trillion dollar company. John Ternus, currently the Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, has been named the incoming CEO, with his appointment effective September 1, 2026.
As part of this planned succession, Tim Cook will not be leaving the company entirely. Instead, he will transition to the role of Executive Chairman of Apple’s board of directors. Cook, who has led the company since 2011, will remain active through the summer to ensure a seamless transition of power to Ternus.
The reorganization also includes a major expansion of responsibilities for Johny Srouji, Apple’s current Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies. Srouji is set to take over the Hardware Engineering department, assuming the portfolio previously held by Ternus. This move consolidates Apple's hardware and silicon efforts under Srouji, whose leadership in developing Apple’s proprietary chips has been a cornerstone of the company’s recent success.
Apple’s board stated that this transition aims to leverage Ternus’s deep hardware experience and Srouji’s technical expertise to guide the company’s future. The shift comes at a critical time as Apple navigates the highly competitive landscape of artificial intelligence and seeks to expand the market for its Vision Pro spatial computing platform.
During his decade-plus at the helm, Cook transformed Apple from a hardware-centric firm into a global powerhouse in services, health, and wearables. Under his watch, products like the Apple Watch and AirPods became industry leaders, and the company’s market valuation reached unprecedented heights. Cook also successfully steered the tech giant through global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and complex trade relations with China.
Incoming CEO John Ternus has been a staple of Apple’s product development for years, overseeing the engineering behind the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Analysts suggest that by placing Ternus and Srouji at the top of the executive pyramid, Apple is doubling down on its commitment to tightly integrated hardware and software.
