First Major California Gubernatorial Debate Set for Wednesday
The first major debate in the California governor’s race is set to air Wednesday at 7 p.m., with voters able to watch the event live on NBC Palm Springs.
Candidates participating in the debate include two Republicans and four Democrats who qualified under Nextar’s national debate criteria. On the Republican side, former Fox News commentator Steve Hilton leads the field, followed by Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.
The Democratic lineup features billionaire activist Tom Steyer, former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, former Congresswoman Katie Porter, and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan.
In a major development ahead of the debate, former California Controller and Democratic candidate Betty Yee announced she is dropping out of the race, citing a lack of voter traction.
The upcoming debate is expected to be a key moment in the early stages of the campaign as candidates look to define their platforms and gain momentum heading into the primary.
