How 'The Godfather' Transformed a Tiny Sicilian Village into a Global Landmark
SAVOCA, Sicily — When Francis Ford Coppola cast 22-year-old Enza Trimarchi as an extra in "The Godfather" in 1971, the young seamstress had no idea she was part of a production that would define her hometown for decades. Filmed in the hilltop village of Savoca, the Sicilian sequences featuring the wedding of Michael Corleone and Apollonia Vitelli turned a remote settlement into a permanent site of cinematic pilgrimage.
⠀
At the time of filming, Savoca was largely untouched by the modern world. Residents like Trimarchi, now 76, recall a village with no televisions and no running water, where locals drank rainwater from cisterns. The arrival of Coppola and a young Al Pacino marked a sudden end to centuries of isolation, as the production required the local parish to volunteer its chairs and prompted the paving of roads filled with holes to accommodate the crew.
⠀
Today, Savoca has a population of fewer than 100 people but attracts a massive influx of daytrippers between April and October. The village’s medieval layout remains, but it is now populated with souvenir shops and B&Bs, including one aptly named "Il Padrino." Visitors frequently flock to Bar Vitelli to sit where Michael Corleone once sat, a 15th-century building that has become the primary hub for the village’s tourism-based economy.
⠀
For the locals who worked as extras, the memories of the summer of 1971 remain vivid. Vincenzo Pasquale, who played one of Signor Vitelli's sons at age 18, remembers earning 90,000 lire—roughly 150 dollars—which was more than many villagers earned in an entire year. Others recall behind-the-scenes moments, such as Coppola eating ten granitas a day to beat the heat or Al Pacino accidentally injuring his head on an iron staircase during a scene inside a cool chapel.
⠀
While the overwhelming presence of tourists from nearby cruise ports can sometimes be a source of frustration for longtime residents, the consensus remains that the film was a total "godsend." In 2022, Coppola was named an honorary citizen of Savoca, cementing the village's status as a place where Hollywood magic and Sicilian tradition are inextricably linked.
