Nashville Walk Honors Mothers Lost to Childbirth and Calls for Birth Equity

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Centennial Park became a place of remembrance and advocacy on Sunday as the Melanated Birth Collective Nashville held a special walk to honor mothers who have died during or shortly after childbirth. The event sought to bring attention to the life-threatening health risks associated with pregnancy and the specific disparities that disproportionately affect communities of color.

During the walk, Nakishia Fouse, a local doula and member of the collective, read a poignant poem to the crowd, emphasizing the commitment to carrying the stories of those lost and honoring their lives through continued advocacy. The organization's primary mission is to ensure that every Black mother completes their birth journey healthy, happy, and alive.

The urgency of the cause is backed by sobering data from the Tennessee Department of Health, which indicates that Black mothers in the state are nearly three times more likely to die while giving birth compared to non-Hispanic White mothers. To combat these outcomes, members of the collective work as doulas, empowering expectant mothers to be heard and persistent in their medical concerns throughout the pregnancy process.

The human cost of these statistics was personified by participants like Phyllis Lanier, whose daughter, Kelsey Thompson Wallace, died during childbirth in 2021 despite being in good health. Lanier shared the devastating shift from expecting a call of celebration to receiving the news that her daughter had not survived the delivery. Her story served as a powerful reminder of why the collective advocates for women to never stop asking questions until they are confident in their care.

The walk was part of an entire week of outreach efforts by the Melanated Birth Collective to educate women on the importance of self-advocacy. By fostering a community where expectant mothers feel empowered to speak up about how they are feeling, the group hopes to bridge the gap in healthcare equity and prevent future tragedies.
