Shay’s Warriors Brings Back “I Am Hope” Retreat for Cancer Survivors in Coachella Valley
A local nonprofit is once again creating a space for healing, connection, and renewal in the Coachella Valley.
Shay’s Warriors is bringing back its “I Am Hope Survivors Reset Retreat,” a four-day, three-night experience designed for cancer survivors navigating life after treatment. The retreat runs June 11 through June 14 at the luxurious The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage. Offered at no cost to participants, the retreat focuses on the often-overlooked challenges of survivorship, addressing the emotional, physical, and mental toll that can linger long after treatment ends. Organizers say the goal is to give survivors the opportunity to reset, rebuild, and reconnect with themselves in a supportive environment.
Founder Shay Moraga says this year marks a major milestone as the program celebrates its fifth retreat. She emphasizes that while treatment may be over, the journey is far from finished. “Life after treatment is something insurance doesn’t cover,” Moraga has said in the past. “And for many survivors, that can be the hardest part.”
During the retreat, participants take part in a variety of wellness activities, workshops, and shared experiences aimed at fostering healing and resilience. From guided discussions to restorative practices, the program is designed to help survivors process their journey and move forward with strength and support.
Despite being hosted at a luxury resort, the retreat remains completely free thanks to community support, donations, and fundraising efforts throughout the year.
One upcoming event helping fund the experience is a Mother’s Day celebration at Wally's Desert Turtle on May 2 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where proceeds will go toward scholarships for future retreat participants.
Community members are also encouraged to get involved by nominating deserving cancer survivors. Organizers say nominations are open to individuals who have completed treatment, and self-nominations are welcome. To nominate a survivor or learn more about the retreat, visit the organization’s website at IAmHopeRetreat.com. As Shay’s Warriors continues its mission, the message remains clear: survivorship is a journey, and no one has to go through it alone.
