California Unveils Plan to Maintain Record Low Gun Violence Rates
Rob Bonta has announced a new plan to help sustain California’s record low levels of gun violence, as required under Assembly Bill 1252.
The report highlights historic declines in firearm-related deaths across the state, crediting a combination of strong gun laws and targeted prevention programs. Officials say community-based efforts have played a key role in reducing violence and improving public safety outcomes.
However, Bonta warned that these gains could be at risk due to potential federal funding cuts that support many of these initiatives. Without continued financial backing, some of the programs credited with lowering gun violence may face challenges in maintaining their impact.
The plan calls for sustained investment in several key areas, including community violence intervention programs, domestic violence prevention, and efforts to curb illegal gun trafficking.
State leaders say maintaining progress will require ongoing collaboration between local communities, law enforcement, and policymakers to ensure resources remain in place and effective strategies continue to expand.
