Justice Department Opens Investigation into Southern Poverty Law Center

The Justice Department is investigating the Southern Poverty Law Center, the nonprofit known for its work fighting white supremacy and extremist groups.

CEO Margaret Huang says investigators appear to be targeting the organization's use of paid confidential informants to infiltrate those groups. She also said she believes the SPLC may face criminal charges, though the Justice Department has not commented on the matter.

The center has drawn criticism from some who argue it has unfairly targeted conservative groups and individuals alongside its work on extremism.
