Controversial Data Center Proposal Sparks Community Outcry in Coachella
A proposed large-scale development in Coachella is drawing strong reactions from residents and city leaders.
The project, known as the Coachella Valley Technology Campus, would span more than 450 acres of agricultural land on the city’s east side. Plans include multiple data center buildings, an energy facility, and supporting infrastructure to sustain operations.
Developers Stronghold Power Systems and DMK Project Solutions say the project could bring jobs and economic growth to the area.
But many residents are pushing back, raising concerns about water usage, energy demand, air quality, and the loss of farmland. Others worry about the project’s proximity to neighborhoods and schools, as well as its long-term environmental impact.
Dozens gathered near Veterans Park ahead of a city council meeting, planning to speak during public comment—even though the project was not formally listed on the agenda.
Some community members have also expressed frustration over what they describe as a lack of transparency from city leadership.
Coachella Mayor Pro Tem Frank Figueroa says more open dialogue is needed, emphasizing the importance of community input as discussions move forward.
While no formal action was scheduled, the issue is expected to remain a major topic in future city meetings.
