Hidden Hollywood History: Restoration Underway at Palm Springs American Legion Radio Room

A hidden studio that once connected the Coachella Valley to Hollywood’s most iconic voices during the golden age of radio is receiving a new wave of attention. Known as the "Radio Room," the studio is tucked away inside American Legion Post 519 in downtown Palm Springs. Local historians and veterans are now leading a renewed push to restore the space and invite the public to explore this often-overlooked chapter of local history.

The Radio Room offers a rare glimpse into the glamorous Hollywood history that helped define the desert's identity in the mid-20th century. Legends such as Bing Crosby performed multiple shows from the post's stage, often bringing along fellow stars like Jimmy Stewart and Rosemary Clooney. These broadcasts were a staple of the community between the late 1940s and early 1950s, a period frequently referred to as the "Twilight Era" of radio.

Lee Wilson, a spokesperson for the American Legion, noted that the facility was born out of a desire to support the military. Fundraising began during World War II to create a venue where entertainers from the nearby "Movie Colony" could perform for the troops. The resulting infrastructure included a beautiful professional stage and a high-tech control room designed specifically for sound and radio engineers to capture the star-studded performances.

Current efforts are focused on fully restoring the Radio Room to its former glory. This includes expanding the existing archives, tracking down original broadcasting equipment, and preserving the stories of the journalists and actors who frequented the space. Organizers say the goal is not just to look backward, but to provide future generations of veterans and their families with a place to connect with their community’s heritage.

Visitors are encouraged to stop by American Legion Post 519 to see the progress of the restoration and experience a unique piece of Hollywood history that remains right here in the heart of Palm Springs. The project serves as a reminder of the deep and lasting ties between the desert and the legends of the silver screen who once called it their second home.
