Rodeo Meets Runway at Desert Hot Springs High School Fashion Showcase

While country music fans head to festival grounds for Stagecoach Weekend, students at Desert Hot Springs High School are bringing a western flair of their own to campus with their annual fashion show.

This year’s theme, “Rodeo Runway,” aligns perfectly with the weekend’s festivities, as student designers unveil original, rodeo-inspired looks they’ve crafted from start to finish. From sketching concepts to sewing garments and styling final looks, the students have taken full creative control.

In the hours leading up to the show, classrooms buzz with last-minute preparations. Students put finishing touches on their designs while models rehearse their walks and poses, building confidence before stepping onto the runway.

Many designers drew inspiration from classic western aesthetics, incorporating elements like thrifted fabrics, bell sleeves, and earthy tones. Others opted for darker palettes, blending black, gray, and white to create a modern twist on traditional rodeo style.

For the student models, the event is both exciting and nerve-wracking. After a week of practice, they’ve focused on perfecting timing, posture, and stage presence—key elements in bringing each design to life.

The fashion program itself is unique, serving as the only class of its kind in the Palm Springs Unified School District. Led by fashion teacher and department chair Rosa Esposito, the course goes far beyond clothing design. Students explore topics such as appropriate dress, window display, and event production, gaining a broader understanding of the fashion industry.

Esposito says the annual show is a culmination of months of hard work and collaboration. Students not only design garments but also contribute to set design, coordination, and backstage management—skills that translate into real-world experience.

Ultimately, the program emphasizes teamwork, creativity, and discipline, offering students a rare opportunity to express themselves while preparing for future careers.

The fashion show takes place Friday evening at the school gymnasium, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the runway show beginning at 7 p.m. As the lights come up and the music starts, these young designers will showcase more than just fashion—they’ll share the results of dedication, passion, and creative vision.
