Trump Safe After Shots Fired at White House Correspondents’ Dinner; Gunman in Custody
Chaos erupted at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night as President Donald Trump was abruptly rushed off stage by Secret Service agents following a shooting during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The high-profile event was immediately disrupted as agents shouted warnings and moved to secure the President, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance. While being escorted from the room, the President briefly tripped but was quickly helped up by agents and is reported to be unharmed.
Law enforcement officials have identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. Authorities say Allen charged a security checkpoint near the ballroom armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. During the confrontation, a law enforcement officer was shot at close range, but his bullet-resistant vest absorbed the impact. The officer is expected to be fine and was described by the President as being in great spirits.
CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer reported being just a few feet away from the gunman when the shots were fired. Blitzer had stepped out of the main ballroom when the shooting began and described the individual as brandishing a very serious weapon. Guests inside the ballroom sought cover under tables as the Secret Service and National Guard took control of the building.
President Trump held a press conference from the White House shortly after the incident, still wearing his tuxedo. He praised the bravery of the Secret Service and described the attacker as a lone wolf. The White House Correspondents’ Association has officially cancelled the remainder of the evening and announced the dinner will be rescheduled within the next 30 days.
