Diplomatic Hopes Fade as Trump Cancels Envoys’ Pakistan Trip for Iran War Negotiations
Hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough in the war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran faded today as efforts to revive talks reached a standstill. Both Tehran and Washington have shown little sign of softening their positions, with officials from both sides appearing to wait for the other to make the first move.
The potential for a second round of negotiations in Pakistan looked even more unlikely Monday morning following President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel a scheduled trip for special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The envoys were originally expected to meet with Iranian officials in Islamabad over the weekend, but Trump stood by his cancellation, stating that Iranian authorities "can call if they want to talk."
Despite the public standoff, Axios reports that the Iranian government passed a new proposal to the U.S. via Pakistani mediators. This framework reportedly includes a commitment to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the current war, while proposing that the contentious nuclear issue be delayed until future negotiations. While the White House has acknowledged receiving the proposal, the administration has not yet indicated a willingness to engage under those specific terms.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has continued a regional tour to shore up support. After a stop in Pakistan and the Gulf, he touched down in St. Petersburg, Russia, this morning to meet with President Vladimir Putin. Russia remains a critical ally for Iran, and the discussions are expected to focus on both bilateral relations and the broader conditions under which U.S.-Iranian negotiations might eventually resume.
