Campaign Launched to Save Golden Gate Park's Last Public Pianos from Vandalism and Weather

Golden Gate Park is currently down to its last functioning public piano after a series of vandalism incidents and harsh weather damage rendered nearly all other instruments unplayable. The nonprofit group Illuminate, which maintains the pianos along JFK Drive, reports that the initiative is at a critical crossroads.

For the past four years, Illuminate has restored donated pianos and placed them along the JFK Promenade as part of a public art and music project. Ben Davis, the founder of Illuminate, described the effort as a "beautiful last hurrah" for instruments that would otherwise be discarded, providing a space where community joy and connection can flourish.

However, that joy has been met with significant setbacks. On April 18, a piano positioned in front of the Conservatory of Flowers was flipped over and destroyed. According to Patricia Wilson of Illuminate, three of the 12 pianos placed on the "Golden Mile" have been lost to vandals, while others have succumbed to San Francisco’s relentless moisture, fog, and rain.

The loss is felt deeply by local residents like 80-year-old Edward Young, who plays the pianos regularly to stay active and manage his dementia. He noted that while putting a piano outdoors is inherently harsh on the instrument, the joy they provide to passersby is immeasurable.

In response to the dwindling number of instruments—down from the usual three to just one—Illuminate has launched an online campaign. The funds will be used to restore more donated pianos, build stronger protective covers to ward off the elements, and explore the purchase of specialized pianos designed specifically for outdoor endurance.

Despite the challenges, Davis remains committed to the project, viewing the park as a meaningful final chapter for the aging instruments. The group is now calling on the community to help ensure that the music on the JFK Promenade does not fall silent.
