Festival Billboards on I-10 Vandalized as Officials Plan Stronger Security
Festival season along the Coachella Valley is once again drawing attention to billboard displays lining the I-10 freeway, but not all of it has been positive.
Recent social media videos show festival-themed billboards being vandalized as drivers head into the desert for major events like the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Some footage appears to show damage being done in real time, while other posts highlight defaced advertisements promoting headliners and festival branding.
Advertising representatives say even minor vandalism carries significant costs, with vinyl replacements alone estimated at around $900 per panel, not including labor or equipment. In some cases, multiple billboard units have been targeted despite security measures being in place overnight.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office says vandalism is a criminal offense under California law and can result in fines or jail time for those responsible. Officials also warn that the damage affects local businesses, property owners, and the region’s image during one of its busiest tourism periods.
As festival attendance continues to grow, advertising and law enforcement officials say they are planning to increase security and surveillance along the freeway corridor ahead of next year’s events to help prevent further incidents.
