Road Work Coming to Cathedral City's Whitewater Neighborhood

Road Work Coming to Cathedral City's Whitewater Neighborhood

Cathedral City is kicking off the second and final phase of a multi-year street repair effort in the Whitewater neighborhood on Tuesday, April 28. Construction crews will begin full pavement reconstruction on three streets that have been flagged as top repair priorities under the city's Pavement Management Program.

The streets getting work are:

  • Ortega Road between Shifting Sands Trail and Cathedral Canyon Drive

  • Navajo Trail between 33rd Avenue and Dinah Shore Drive

  • Pueblo Trail between 33rd Avenue and Dinah Shore Drive.

Crews will tear out and replace the existing asphalt, rebuild curb ramps to meet ADA accessibility standards, adjust utility covers to match the new road grade, and install fresh lane markings. Work is expected to finish by early June 2026.

The total construction budget comes in at around $927,742. Residents won't see any impact to the city's general fund, as the project is covered through a mix of federal Community Development Block Grant funding ($452,412), California SB-1 road repair funds ($430,429), and a $44,900 reimbursement from CVWD for the utility work.

This phase rounds out a broader effort that previously brought repaved streets to portions of Sky Blue Water Trail, Shifting Sands Trail, 33rd Avenue, and Whispering Palms Trail, where a two-mile shared bike and vehicle lane was also added.
