State Department to Issue Commemorative Trump-Design Passports for U.S. 250th Anniversary

State Department to Issue Commemorative Trump-Design Passports for U.S. 250th Anniversary

The United States will soon begin issuing passports featuring an image of President Donald Trump to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. A State Department official confirmed Tuesday that the new design will become the default document for those renewing their passports in person at the Washington Passport Agency once the stock becomes available this summer.

While the Washington location will transition to the commemorative version, the official noted that existing passport designs will be maintained for online renewals and other processing locations. Unlike temporary commemorative items like coins or national park passes, a U.S. passport is a primary, internationally recognized form of identification typically valid for a 10-year period.

Visual mockups of the new document show President Trump’s face and signature rendered in gold on the inside cover. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated that the passports will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery to celebrate the historic occasion in July while maintaining the high-level security features standard to all U.S. travel documents.

The commemorative design also includes historical elements on the back cover, featuring an image from John Trumbull’s "The Declaration of Independence" painting. This replaces the current design, which features Percy Moran’s painting of Francis Scott Key and lyrics from the national anthem on the inside cover.

This move follows a broader trend of incorporating the president's likeness into national symbols for the "America 250" celebration. The Department of the Interior previously unveiled a national park pass featuring Trump alongside George Washington, and the Commission of Fine Arts recently approved a commemorative coin. Over the past year, several high-profile institutions, including the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Institute of Peace, have also seen the president's name affixed to their titles.

State Department officials have not yet confirmed the total number of commemorative passports that will be issued, though they are expected to be treated as a limited release during the anniversary window.
