Torrance Parents Shocked as Local Tutor is Charged in Trump Assassination Attempt

Parents in Torrance, California, are expressing disbelief following the arrest of Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old tutor charged with the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump. Allen is accused of storming the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday, allegedly firing a weapon as he ran toward the ballroom while armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.

Allen made his first federal court appearance on Monday, where he was hit with three major counts: attempting to assassinate the President, transportation of firearms through interstate commerce, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. If convicted of the assassination attempt, he could face a life sentence. During the chaos, a Secret Service agent was struck by a bullet, though his protective vest prevented injury.

Known locally as a "Teacher of the Month" at C2 Education in 2024, Allen is described by those who knew him as a brilliant but reclusive individual. He holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Caltech and a master’s in computer science. Students and parents at the tutoring center recalled him as a "regular tutor" who often discussed his independent video game project, "Bohrdom," which he described on LinkedIn as an "atomic fighting game."

Federal investigators have begun piecing together a digital trail that points to a calculated motive. On a now-deleted Bluesky account, Allen reportedly shared posts criticizing the administration's policies on ICE and international relations. In a note sent to his family just before the incident, he allegedly referred to himself as a "friendly federal assassin," and court documents suggest he had "prioritized" administration targets from highest to lowest rank.

The investigation shifted to Allen's family home in Torrance over the weekend, where federal agents conducted a search. Allen’s sister informed investigators that while the weapons found in the home were purchased legally, their parents were unaware of their existence. Records show Allen had no official party preference but had made a small donation to a PAC supporting Kamala Harris in 2024.

As the legal process moves forward in Washington D.C., the Torrance community is left grappling with the contrast between the "quiet, gentle" man they saw in their hallways and the high-profile federal charges he now faces.
