UCLA Study: Latinos Bear Heaviest Burden of High California Gas Prices

New research shows Latinos are the most impacted by high gas prices across California. An analysis by the UCLA Latino Policy Politics Institute finds that Latino families were already feeling the burden of higher costs on everyday goods and housing before the latest surge at the pump.

At gas stations along the 91 freeway in Corona, drivers are feeling the pinch. Rosario Majano of the UCLA Latino Policy Politics Institute notes that even before the recent price increases, Latino households were spending more on gasoline than non-Latino households while simultaneously facing higher housing cost burdens.

Research shows that Latinos in California spend an average of $5,000 a year on gasoline. Analysts attribute this to the fact that Latino workers are more likely to commute and significantly less likely to work from home. According to the study, 71% of Latinos drive alone to work, 13% carpool, and only 8% have the option to work remotely.

The transition to greener alternatives also remains a challenge. Only 3% of Latinos in the state own an electric or hybrid vehicle. Commuters like Abel Martinez point out that electric cars are often on the pricier side, making them inaccessible for lower-income families who are already struggling financially.

UCLA researchers hope this data will serve as a tool for policy makers to find ways to support communities that contribute significantly to the economy but are currently struggling to get ahead of the rising cost of living.
