Arroyo Grande Teen Sues Planet Fitness Over Hidden Camera Investigation

An 18-year-old woman has filed a lawsuit against Planet Fitness in Arroyo Grande, alleging she was one of dozens of victims filmed without their knowledge inside the gym's private facilities. The legal action follows a police announcement earlier this month revealing a massive investigation into hidden recordings.

The Arroyo Grande Police Department identified a suspect after a forensic review uncovered more than 50 videos. The recordings allegedly show various women inside the gym’s tanning and red-light therapy rooms. Investigators believe the filmings occurred over the course of an entire year, spanning from January to December of 2025.

According to the lawsuit, the teenager contacted authorities after she personally witnessed someone filming her while she was inside a tanning bed. The suit accuses Planet Fitness of gross negligence and the intentional infliction of emotional distress, while also alleging a violation of California Civil Rights law.

The plaintiff is seeking financial compensation and is demanding that the gym implement significant policy and security changes to prevent future privacy breaches.

Planet Fitness previously stated that the safety and privacy of its members are top priorities. The franchise group confirmed it has canceled the membership of the individual in question and is working closely with local authorities.

Arroyo Grande Police have not yet publicly identified the suspect or confirmed if an arrest has been made as the investigation remains ongoing.
