UPDATE 8:05 a.m.: With incident information from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department

A pursuit involving a stolen vehicle shut down Interstate 10 near Palm Springs early Thursday morning after a driver fled from deputies, going the wrong way on the freeway with a blown rear tire before being taken into custody near Date Palm Drive.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, deputies were dispatched at 4:55 a.m. to the 25000 block of Silent Creek Road in Moreno Valley on a report of a stolen vehicle. Deputies located the vehicle traveling northbound on Gilman Springs Road and Highway 79 and attempted to pull the driver over, but the driver refused to stop, prompting a pursuit.

The chase continue onto the eastbound 10 Freeway, where CHP incident logs show the vehicle at one point traveling westbound in eastbound lanes near Hargrave Street with at least one tire completely blown out. Deputies used a drone to assist in clearing the vehicle after it finally stopped near Date Palm Drive. The driver complied with commands to exit and was taken into custody without incident, the Sheriff's Department said.

The freeway was shut down in both directions during the incident but has since reopened. The Sheriff's Department says this remains an ongoing investigation, and no further details are available at this time.
