E-Bike Thefts Are Up in Palm Springs, and Police Say Thieves Are Moving Fast

The Palm Springs Police Department says e-bike thefts have been on the rise, and in many cases, bikes are being taken in a matter of seconds.
Police say thieves aren't just after the whole bike. Quick-release components and unlocked batteries are being targeted just as often, and storage areas like carports, patios, and unlocked garages are among the most common spots where bikes are going missing. Bikes left outside overnight, even in residential neighborhoods, are being hit more frequently.
Officers are urging owners to use a high-quality U-lock or heavy-duty chain lock rather than cable locks, which can be cut easily. They recommend locking the frame and both wheels to something fixed and immovable, parking in well-lit, high-traffic areas, and removing batteries, lights, and other accessories when leaving the bike unattended.
Keeping a record of your bike's serial number and photos is also key. Police say that information significantly improves the chances of recovery, especially because stolen e-bikes move quickly to online resale markets. "The faster we get the information, the better chance we have of locating it before it's gone," the department said.
Riders can register their e-bike for free at BikeIndex.org, a platform trusted by law enforcement nationwide. If your bike is stolen, or if something just feels off, police ask that you report it right away. You can reach the Palm Springs Police Department at 760-327-1441 for non-emergencies.
