Manny the Movie Guy Reviews: ‘Deep Water’ Survival Thrills and the Return of Miranda Priestly

It is a massive weekend at the cinema, and our own Manny de la Rosa—Manny the Movie Guy—is back in the studio with a double feature of reviews. Whether you are looking for a high-altitude nightmare or a high-fashion face-off, there is something for everyone opening today, May 1st.

First up is a survival thriller that Manny describes as a "thrill-a-minute roller coaster ride." 'Deep Water' takes the classic disaster formula to terrifying new heights—literally. The film follows a plane crash at 30,000 feet that leaves survivors stranded in shark-infested waters.

Manny sat down with the powerhouse duo behind the project: Director Renny Harlin, the master of action who famously helmed 'Deep Blue Sea,' and rock legend Gene Simmons, whose new company, Simmons-Hamilton Productions, is making its big-screen debut.

"I wanted to do a movie that has the spectacle—the plane crash, the sharks—but it’s really about the people," Harlin told Manny. Gene Simmons added that 'Deep Water' "rings all the bells," recommending fans see it in a theater with a big group for the full experience.

From killer sharks to killer heels, the second big release is the one fans have been waiting two decades for: 'The Devil Wears Prada 2.'

Meryl Streep returns as the incomparable Miranda Priestly, but the landscape has changed. In the digital age, the print world is crumbling, and in a delicious twist, her former assistant Emily (played by Emily Blunt) is now a high-powered executive who holds the purse strings Miranda desperately needs. Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci also return to round out the iconic cast.

Manny noted that while the sequel leans heavily into nostalgia and a "paint-by-numbers" plot, the chemistry between the leads is still electric. He particularly enjoyed the "real talk" regarding the shift from print media to digital content.

Manny’s verdict? 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' earns a stylish three out of four "Cerulean blue kisses."

Whether you want the chills of the deep or the thrills of the runway, both films are in theaters now.
