The Dog That Sniffs Out Data: How Electronic Detection K-9s Are Cracking Cyber Crime Cases

GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC — In the high-stakes world of investigating internet crimes against children, law enforcement has a new secret weapon that fits on four legs. Scooby, an electronic detection K-9, is part of an elite team trained to find the one thing criminals try hardest to hide: digital evidence.

Provided by the nonprofit "Defenders for Children," Scooby is one of only 27 dogs in the nation specialized in sniffing out the unique chemical scent of electronic components. These K-9s are deployed during search warrants to locate micro-SD cards, hidden cameras, microphones, and burner phones—items so small they are frequently overlooked by human investigators.

The Invisible Evidence

According to Defenders for Children CEO Toni Clark, more than 90% of cases involving child abuse or exploitation rely on digital content stored on these hidden devices. "Devices are smaller and easier to hide. It is becoming more difficult, but the dogs can smell them," Clark said.

On average, an electronic detection K-9 like Scooby locates two or more devices that have been missed by human officers in every single search. To date, the program has helped locate more than 3,200 devices, leading to confessions and the rescue of over 1,000 children.

A Rising Digital Threat

The need for these specialized units is more urgent than ever. Data from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) shows a staggering increase in digital threats:

- CyberTipline reports of online enticement jumped from 292,951 in 2024 to 518,720 in 2025.

- Cases involving Artificial Intelligence (AI) exploded from roughly 6,800 to over 440,000 in the same one-year period.

"The more social media outlets and things that are out there, that's just a way to trade or share this material," said Investigator Alicia Turner, Scooby's handler at the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. "The more that report it, the more our work rises."

Compassion On and Off the Clock

While Scooby’s nose is a powerful tool for justice, his temperament is just as vital. Defenders for Children specifically selects gentle breeds because these dogs often serve a dual purpose. When a search is over, Scooby transitions into a therapy role, helping to lower the stress levels of victims and families during one of the most traumatic moments of their lives.

Defenders for Children aims to eventually place 3,000 of these dogs in agencies across the country. The nonprofit currently covers the cost of the K-9, its specialized training, and the staff required to launch the program in new jurisdictions.
