Another One Bites the Dust: Brian May’s Daffodil Donation Blocked by Village Council

ELSTEAD, UK — Queen’s legendary guitarist Brian May is finding out that even "Rock and Roll Royalty" has to answer to the local parish council. The musician’s plans to further beautify his home village of Elstead, Surrey, with thousands of daffodils have officially "bitten the dust" after local authorities blocked the donation on safety grounds.

May, who wrote global anthems like "We Will Rock You," donated 3,000 bulbs to the village last year, which were planted by local schoolchildren and volunteers outside the village church. However, when he offered to extend the floral display to the main Village Green for next spring, the Elstead Parish Council rejected the proposal.

The "Safety" Dispute

The council’s primary objection centers on traffic safety, specifically that the flowers would interfere with "sight lines" for drivers navigating the area. May took to Instagram to express his frustration to his 3.6 million followers, questioning how 18-inch flower stalks could realistically obstruct a driver’s view—especially on a green frequently surrounded by parked cars and a seven-foot-high ice cream van.

"We were all hoping to adorn the main Village Green for next Spring … but sadly the Parish Council last night rejected my plan," May wrote, noting that he was "reluctantly" canceling his order for more bulbs.

The Council’s Response

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Elstead Parish Council clarified that while they couldn't support the scale of the initial proposal for the main green, they are not entirely against the project. The council has offered several "alternative equally prominent sites" for the planting.

"The Parish Council has a duty to balance the practical usage of our green along with the views of our residents," the spokesperson said. The council noted the green is a multi-use space that hosts key community events and is regularly crossed by pedestrians.

While "Team Daffodil"—the group of local volunteers—remains disappointed, the council says it welcomes further discussion to find a compromise that keeps the village blooming without compromising safety.
