Keys to the Kingdom: Coachella Honors Lady Arab Soccer Team Following Historic State Title Run
COACHELLA, CA — The cheers echoing through Veterans Memorial Park tonight weren't for a goal on the pitch, but for the history-makers who scored them. The City of Coachella officially honored the Coachella Valley High School Lady Arab varsity soccer team with the Key to the City following a season that captivated the entire region.
The ceremony celebrated a run of a lifetime that saw the team capture the CIF Southern Section Division 5 title—an accomplishment the high school had not seen since the men’s soccer team achieved the feat in 2007. While the Lady Arabs eventually fell just short in the state championship game, the sentiment from city officials and fans alike was clear: they had already won it all.
A Community United
Coachella Mayor Dr. Frank Figueroa and State Assemblymember Jeff Gonzales were among the officials speaking at the event, emphasizing how the team’s success acted as a catalyst for community unity. According to city staff, the "crowds they brought out" during home games were a testament to the pride felt across the valley.
"This ceremony is all about celebrating this squad's accomplishments," city officials noted. "This team's success is what brought the community together."
The Voice of the Team
For the players, the support of the community was the "twelfth man" on the field. Junior goalkeeper Vanessa Garcia reflected on the pressure of the postseason and how the local fans provided the necessary spark.
"We are very grateful that a lot of people came to support us throughout this season," Garcia said. "During the game we had a lot of pressure within us, but making sure that they were there cheering for us made us feel very confident."
Head coach Francisco Morales described the journey back to this field as an honor, crediting the sacrifices made by the players throughout the grueling season.
Looking Ahead
The sense of pride was perhaps most evident among the parents. The mother of the team captain shared her overwhelm and inspiration, noting the daily struggles and fatigue her daughter faced in her quest to lead the team to the top.
"They all fit in like the right place and that’s why they are where they are," she said. "Hopefully next year, they'll go all the way. We still have another year."
With a strong core of juniors like Garcia returning for the 2026-2027 season, the "Key to the City" may just be the beginning of a new dynasty for the Lady Arabs.
