Local Principal Runs 50 Marathons, Proves It’s Never Too Late to Go the Distance

By day, he’s a dedicated high school principal. But outside the office, Richard Pimentel has accomplished something few can claim—running more than 50 marathons across the United States.

Pimentel, who leads Amistad Continuation High School, says he never saw himself as an athlete growing up. In fact, he describes himself as the opposite.

“I wasn’t much of an athlete,” Pimentel said. “I ended up just kind of being a runner—that’s the only thing I could do.”

That simple beginning turned into something much bigger. While serving in the Army, Pimentel continued running and discovered a true passion for it. Alongside him during that time was his close friend Dustin, who would go on to play a major role in his journey.

Even after their paths split—Pimentel settling in the Coachella Valley and Dustin moving to Minnesota—the two stayed connected through running. Together, they set an ambitious goal: complete 50 marathons in 50 states before turning 50.

Their shared commitment became the foundation of a decades-long friendship.

“You need that community, that bond,” Pimentel said. “We were always comparing times, training, and finding ways to meet up—even if it was just for a run.”

On average, the pair reunited about twice a year, often planning races or training sessions around those visits. Over time, the miles added up—and so did the memories.

Now, after years of dedication, both men have achieved their goal.

For Pimentel, the accomplishment is more than just personal. As a principal, he hopes his story resonates with students who may be facing their own challenges.

“If it helps a student say, ‘Hey, Mr. Pimentel did something hard,’ and they see the training and commitment it took—that he didn’t quit when it got tough—then that means everything,” he said.

From someone who once doubted his athletic ability to completing one of running’s most grueling challenges, Pimentel’s journey is a reminder that perseverance, passion, and connection can carry you farther than you ever imagined.
